Pneumatic Action Overhaul — The Cresthaven Auditorium

A full pneumatic action overhaul on a mid-century electro-pneumatic auditorium organ — pneumatic motors and primary relays rebuilt across all three manual divisions to correct slow, uneven key response before a season of scheduled recitals.

The project

Touring recitalists had begun flagging uneven note response — some keys speaking promptly, others noticeably lagging — a symptom traced to inconsistent pneumatic motor performance across the divisions rather than any single failed component. Every pneumatic motor in all three manual divisions was disassembled, releathered, and bench-tested individually for consistent response time before reinstallation, rather than replacing only the worst-performing units, to bring the entire action back to a single consistent standard rather than a patchwork of old and new components.

Post-overhaul testing measured note-to-speech delay across a full octave on each manual to confirm consistency within a few milliseconds division-to-division, a standard the hall’s technical staff specifically requested after the touring complaints.
